Fertility & Preconception

Preconception Health for Men

by Nikki Warren on May 02, 2022
Male Infertility

Research increasingly shows just how vital it is for men to follow a structured preconception care plan. It takes approximately 74 days to produce a new batch of sperm cells, and during this period, sperm are highly vulnerable to toxins, oxidative stress, and nutrient deficiencies.

Male factors account for around 40% of infertility cases, and studies indicate that sperm DNA damage can increase the risk of miscarriage or even infertility.

By following a targeted preconception care plan for at least 3–4 months, men can significantly improve the quality of their sperm and increase the couple’s likelihood of a healthy conception and pregnancy.

Research also shows that deficiencies in vitamins A, D, and E, as well as zinc, can negatively impact male fertility. Other nutrients have also been investigated in clinical trials for their role in supporting sperm health and overall reproductive function.

Vitamin E

This study showed 200mg of vitamin E taken daily for at least 3 months improved IVF fertilisation rates. EvNolMax® is a patented form of vitamin E which exhibits 40 to 60 times stronger antioxidant potency. Compared to the regular tocopherol vitamin E.

Vitamin C

One study showed that 200mg taken daily for more than 3 weeks was equivalent to taking 1000mg of vitamin C. This is in terms of improvement in sperm parameters. After 2 months, several men in both treatment groups impregnated their wives compared to none in the placebo group.

Folate

If you thought folate was only important for women prior to conception think again. Higher folate intake is associated with a lower incidence of sperm aneuploidy (chromosome damage in the sperm).

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 has been studied numerous times at doses between 1000mcg to 6000mcg daily. This study of men with a sperm count of less than 20 million/ml showed an increase to over 100 million/ml. This was after taking 1000mcg of vitamin B12 daily for 3 months.

CoQ10

CoQ10 has been found to significantly increase sperm motility at a dose of 50mg twice daily for 3 months. Another study found that 60mg daily increased fertilisation rates when taken for 3 months.

Lycopene

Lycopene has been found in several studies to improve sperm motility at doses 4-8mg daily.

Iodine, Zinc, Selenium

It’s a good idea to check thyroid function when speaking to your health professional about preconception health. Hypothyroidism can adversely affect all sperm parameters – sperm count, motility and morphology and affects erectile function.

The longer a man is hypothyroid, the more damage to his testes. Iodine, zinc and selenium are important nutrients for healthy thyroid function. These nutrients are often deficient in the diet due a deficiency in our soil.

Preconception Multivitamins for Men

Taking a preconception multivitamin for men that contains all of these nutrients is a fantastic start. Preconception multivitamins can help men contribute to their part in a healthy conception.
