When Does Ovulation Occur and How Do You Know?

by NaturoBest Naturopath Team on Oct 08, 2026
when does ovulation occur

If you're trying to conceive, you've probably noticed how much of the conversation comes back to ovulation. Knowing when it happens, and how to recognise the signs, can take a lot of the guesswork out of the process and help the whole experience feel a little more within your control.

It's also worth knowing that ovulation isn't always as predictable as the standard guidelines suggest, and that's completely normal.

Understanding Your Cycle and Where Ovulation Fits In

The menstrual cycle is often described as 28 days, but this is an average rather than a rule. Cycles anywhere from 21 to 35 days are considered normal, and it's common for your cycle length to vary a little from month to month.

Each cycle begins with your period and moves into the follicular phase, when follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland prompts the ovaries to develop follicles, each containing an immature egg. As the leading follicle grows, it produces more oestrogen. Once oestrogen reaches a certain level, it triggers a surge of luteinising hormone (LH), which causes the mature egg to be released. This is ovulation, and it's the point in your cycle when conception becomes possible.

After ovulation, the empty follicle becomes the corpus luteum and produces progesterone, which prepares the uterine lining. This second half of the cycle, the luteal phase, lasts until your next period begins.

When Does Ovulation Actually Happen?

You've probably heard that ovulation happens on day 14. That's true for some women with a 28-day cycle, but it can be misleading if your cycle is shorter or longer.

The luteal phase tends to be more consistent than the first half of the cycle, usually lasting around 12 to 14 days. So rather than counting forward from your period, it's often more helpful to count back from when your next period is due. In a 32-day cycle, ovulation is more likely around day 18 to 20. In a 25-day cycle, it may be as early as day 11 to 13.

Research tracking the timing of the fertile window has also found that it varies considerably, even in women whose cycles are usually regular. That’s why getting to know your own cycle is central to optimising your chances of conception.

The Signs That Ovulation Is Approaching

Your body gives you a few helpful signals in the days around ovulation.

Cervical mucus is one of the most useful. As ovulation approaches, rising oestrogen makes it clearer, stretchier and more abundant, often compared to raw egg white, which helps sperm survive and move. After ovulation, it becomes thicker as progesterone rises.

Some women notice a mild ache on one side of the pelvis around ovulation, anywhere from a brief twinge to a dull ache lasting a few hours. Not everyone feels it, and that's perfectly normal.

Your basal body temperature, your temperature at rest, rises slightly after ovulation because of progesterone. It confirms that ovulation has happened rather than predicting it, but tracking it over a few cycles can reveal your pattern.

Tracking Methods That Can Help

Ovulation predictor kits detect the LH surge, which typically comes 24 to 36 hours before ovulation, so a positive result tells you ovulation is likely on its way.

Fertility awareness methods bring the signs above together with your cycle length to build a picture of your fertile window. Cycle tracking apps can help too, especially when you log your actual symptoms rather than relying on predicted averages. A large study of more than 600,000 cycles found that tracking physiological signs, not just cycle length, gives a clearer picture of when you're fertile. Most women find it takes a few cycles to get the hang of, so be patient with yourself.

What Irregular Cycles Mean for Ovulation

For some women, cycle length varies enough to make ovulation genuinely hard to predict. An irregular cycle doesn't always mean you're not ovulating, but it can make the timing less predictable from month to month.

Stress, low body weight, thyroid conditions and polycystic ovary syndrome can all affect the signalling between the brain and the ovaries. Stress in particular is something many women underestimate.

If your cycles vary a lot in length, or you've gone three or more months without a period, it's worth speaking with your GP or healthcare practitioner, who can help work out what's going on.

Why Nutrition Matters Before Pregnancy

Preparing for pregnancy is also a lovely time to look at your nutrition. Understanding what preconception vitamins actually do can help explain why foundational nutrition matters well before you see a positive test.

For example, folate is important for healthy foetal brain and nervous system development, and because this development starts so early, often before you know you're pregnant, it's recommended that women start taking folate before trying to conceive. Iodine is another important nutrient to be aware of, as it supports healthy thyroid function, and in early pregnancy your baby relies on your thyroid hormones for their own brain development.

Preconception Multi for Women brings both together in a comprehensive formula that supports reproductive health and helps prepare the body for pregnancy. It includes Quatrefolic® active folate, 270 mcg of iodine and hydroxocobalamin, the natural form of vitamin B12 found in food, plus 100 mg of CoQ10 in every daily dose. Formulated with six patented ingredients selected for their quality, Preconception Multi for Women was also awarded Silver at the 2026 Clean + Conscious Awards.

Traditional Herbal Support for Your Cycle

An unpredictable cycle or PMS can leave you feeling out of step with your own body. When your period arrives earlier or later than expected, or the days beforehand bring discomfort and mood changes, it can be hard to know what to expect from one month to the next.

Female Balance combines chaste tree, traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to help regulate a healthy menstrual cycle, reduce cycle irregularity and relieve symptoms of PMS, with Safr'Inside® saffron and St John's wort to support emotional balance throughout your cycle. When your cycle feels more settled, the signs and tracking methods above may feel easier to follow too.
